CARD, Inc. and CARD Mutual Benefit Association, Inc. (CARD-MBA), in cooperation with Microinsurance MBA Association of the Philippines, Inc. (MiMAP) and the Microinsurance Division of the Insurance Commission (IC), showcased their practices to the representatives of the National Bank of Ethiopia as part of the 10-day learning session held last March 2016.
The representatives were introduced to the CARD MRI Development Institute, Inc. (CMDI) in Bay, Laguna to learn about CARD MBA, Inc. May Dawat, General Manager of CARD MBA, lead the discussion of the structure of CARD MBA as one of the subsidiaries of CARD, Inc. that provides microinsurance to families living below the poverty line. The transition of CARD-MRI from focusing on poverty alleviation to financial systems was also discussed. Both discussions were of particular interest to the Ethiopian Insurance Examiners.
The visitors were also exposed to the communities of CARD MBA members as part of the on-site visit. They were able to witness an actual center-community meeting, which included a short learning session on the use of automated teller machines for CARD Bank, Inc. This on-site visit was an opportunity for the visitors to recognize the empowerment CARD MBA brings to their members through financial inclusion and leadership.
Lee Malapad, Training and Consultancy Officer of MiMAP, , also shared the roles of MiMAP as an institution which advocates policy initiatives and provides technical services for its network of Mutual Benefit Associations. MiMAP has been instrumental in providing risk management solutions, patterned after the CARD MBA’s approach to microinsurance development.
This 10-day learning session aimed to introduce Ethiopian Insurance Examiners to the insurance industry in the country. Joining this were Woyeni Mamo, Muhdin Shifa, Bonsa Mitiku, Hadush Gebru, and Belay Tutu. The event was organized by the Insurance Commission through Rosalina Bactol and Wilma Conde.
