MiMAP Workshop Series: Gearing Towards Effective Leadership and Governance

   A leadership training workshop was held last December 9-11, 2015 dubbed as Life Skills for Effective Mi-MBA Governance, the three-day event focused on discussing various leadership principles, practical applications and other important factors that can help in organizational management to boost leadership and management skills in Mi-MBA governance..

   The said leadership training workshop was on its second run as a new training program in professionalizing MBA Board and managers. It aimed to develop the leadership potential and capabilities of the MBA Board, management and staff.

   Different leadership styles and its practical applications were presented by Teresita G. Barcoma of the Social Development Office of the University of St La Salle. She stressed the importance of interpersonal and group handling skills in promoting good leadership for MBA management. These skills are pertinent to acquire especially by newly-minted board members of Mi-MBAs, who among which are ordinary members such as nanay entrepreneurs.

   Dr. Nimfa de Vera, Directress of the Center for Career Development of St Paul University, Quezon City, discussed the application of different leadership styles in various set ups. According to de Vera, different settings in the industry call for varied leadership styles. She highlighted the importance of communication and the art of diplomacy in the workplace. Along with these learnings, she also emphasized the need for negotiation skills, and for responsibility and accountability in decision-making. Real world examples were given to expound the importance of these skills.

   Lee Malapad, MiMAP Training and Consultancy Manager, said that leadership workshops like this are important because it develops the soft skills of the trustees and managers in different areas.

Personal development, points in planning mindful and productive meetings and conflict management and resolution were also discussed during the learning session.
